It was halftime, and the majorettes led the band onto the field with their shiny white boots hugging their calves like a second skin. They stepped so high and so briskly that the pleats in their skirts never had a chance to settle on the tops of their thighs; the fabric fluttered up with every step they took as if repelled by the flesh. To the man who watched so intently, it seemed that their flesh was gleaming.
